We have a split 7″ with our friends Graveyard coming out sometime in the coming weeks. It will be a part of the Volcom Entertainment split 7″ series. Our side of the split will have a song called Antler Wings, which is actually a pre-Neptune With Fire song that we decided to rework and release.
In the meantime, Decibel Magazine has posted Antler Wings online for all to hear, so go check it out! A 6-minute Ancestors song? You know you’re curious.
We’re very excited to announce that we’ve accepted an invitation to play ROADBURN FESTIVAL in April 2010 in Tilburg, Holland. We’ll be playing the Green Room at 013 on Thursday, April 15.
We will also be doing a short European tour around the festival with our good friends Night Horse.

“The box set and everything it includes (aside from the LP itself) have been designed and constructed by Husk Industries (SF). Husk Ind and resident pen wizard Todd White have collaborated with Ancestors over the past few years to offer unique merchandise at shows, all of which have been produced with the intent to present goods that graphically complement, and function visually as one with the sound and progressive vision of the band.
From the pen to the press we strive to achieve visually what Ancestors has created sonically, by interpreting the energy of the sound and translating it into something tangible. The purity of the process is what separates us, as we have no intent to put out anything that’s been tampered: no clip art, no short cuts, no biting, all ink, all brush or pen, and only us, having been built by our hands from start to finish. It’s a great honor to have worked with Ancestors so far, and we’re all really excited to be a part of helping with the release of their new record, Of Sound Mind. Also of note is the album art work that Derek Albeck created for this release; a truly fresh and unique vision. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Infrasonic Sound by Pete Lyman, known for his diverse work with Mars Volta, Qui and No Age. Ancestors, including contributions by notable Los Angeles artists David Scott Stone (Melvins, Unwound, Slug), Sera Timms (Black Math Horsemen) and cellist Ramiro Zapata (Jesus Makes the Shotgun Sound) have created an album truly Of Sound Mind; a refreshing and aptly named experience of incredible proportions.

In evolutionary theory, species that share an ancestor are said to be of common descent. There’s nothing common about the music of Los Angeles quintet ANCESTORS. To peg or try to pigeon hole the art they create would be missing the point. But for most, reference and understanding lays the foundation for common ground. What Ancestors ‘shares’ is a unique vision to create something passionate, vital and challenging. OF SOUND MIND is a journey through the past into the future; a signpost for a quickly emerging force of musical power and creativity. Where Ancestors showed signs of promise on their debut Neptune With Fire, they have trail blazed new pathways with the 8-part opus Of Sound Mind. They have channeled the freedom of progressive stalwarts King Crimson, the craft and insight of Pink Floyd, and the depth and brooding of Neurosis. The ‘common descent’ lies in the courage they share with these aforementioned groups to push the limit, cementing their foundation without rooting themselves in the general trappings of music journalism or pop culture. To put linear constrictions on their journey would be an insult to all that have strived to create something new, the true essence of art and expression. Ancestors weave an unorthodox mixture of sonic textures, down-tempo riffs and rhythms, accented with well-crafted melodies and at times full-throttle assaults. Lyrically and thematically, Of Sound Mind contemplates the quandaries of human psychology and its effect on and within the development of modern society. Although essentially conceptual in nature, the record is a blatant transition from the allegorical and mythological framework of their debut Neptune With Fire. The 8 part, 1-hour plus album lends meaning, while actively seeking answers, much like the work of Camus or Thoreau. Without absolution or authority, Ancestors insight a thought crusade with meaningful intent.
